The first WrestleMania took place earlier that year although that wasn’t under the traditional pay-per-view model, then WrestleMania II followed in 1986 and they were off to the races in terms of PPV events. Keep in mind that this was when pay-per-view was really in its infancy, so it’s not a surprise that it was a low number. The only PPV known as The Wrestling Classic did around 47,000 PPV buys. In other words, it goes by quickly and in a lot of cases, there isn’t a lot to analyze in terms of the matches. The unique thing about this show is that there were 15 matches that took place with the longest match going around nine minutes. There was also a WWE Title match between Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper. It ended up being 14 tournament matches because there was one double countout, but the point remains that it was a lot of matches on one show. The concept behind the show was to do a tournament with 16 wrestlers in it, which meant they could have 15 tournament matches. The Wrestling Classic took place on November 7, 1985, which was the same year as the first WrestleMania. ![]()
